All Dr. Mel has to do is use the term “fact checkers” and the myrmidons will believe it. “Who watches the watchmen” means nothing to them except influencing an episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation or an overrated graphic novel (and horrible TV show).

The origin of “misinformation.”

This toon shows the glaring difficulties with cutting out objectionable material from social media on the web. We want Mark Z. to keep unfactual material off Facebook, but that requires the hiring of many fact checkers working 24/7. And how does fact checking impede freedom of expression? or freedom of speech, for that matter?

We are to be the ultimate arbiters of what is true. We should be able to determine the truth sayers from the liars. But, I’ve found that many are deceived by one who talks big and promises same. We seem to be unable to judge a truth sayer by their past history. Thus a businessman who has failed multiple times in business can still claim to be a great businessman, and many believe him. Or, a life long politician says he believes in eliminating corporate pork, but continues giving pork to corporations. This has been our historical norm: picking the one who looks good, and defeating the one who is the most competent.
