When I lived in Allentown PA, in the 50’s, Polka was more common on the radio than Western music. I loved it. Some bands included banjo, & I enjoyed playing my tenor banjo when a Polka Dane began.
Thirty or so years ago one of the radio stations in the metro area used to have a feature they called the top five at ten. It was how the evening DJ passed off to the overnight DJ. Well, one night it was snowing to beat the band. Around quarter to ten, when the evening DJ did his usual sign-off, he complained that his relief hadn’t arrived; if there was no relief by 10:00, the top five at ten that night would be “Eat It” by “Weird Al” Yankovic. Come 10pm, there were a few seconds of silence, followed by, “It’s 10 PM. Guess who’s still here?” followed immediately by the “BONNNNG! BONNNNG!” of “Eat It.” After the song played through, the DJ came back on, saying, “What, I’m still here!?” and again, “BONNNNG! BONNNNG!” He threatened to start the song a third time; but just after he started it, another voice came on saying, “No, no! I’m here, I’m here!”As it happened, the next afternoon I called the station to complain about its “Moldy Oldie Goldie” (long, irrelevant story). When the afternoon drive DH, who was also the station’s program director, advised me that with the recent change in management, the DJs would be allowed more freedom in what was played, I asked, “Oh, is that why Whatshisname was able to play ‘Eat It’ for the top five at ten last night?” He replied, “Well, if you listen after I go off this evening, you’ll find he’s no longer here.” He wasn’t. And he was never heard from again.
