It’s actually an awesome moment for kids when they catch on to the adult stories. Like they just figured out a mystery.

I figured it out at 6 or 7. But to keep us kids from snooping around the house for gifts, my father invented the story of the Delivery Truck! And…oh, so mean….he would invent reasons why the Delivery Truck might not make it to our house on Christmas Eve! (Even better excuse if it was snowing!). Meanie. Oh, how I miss Dad.

When I was in my early 20s, I would give my nephews a ten dollar bill in a card for birthdays, etc. I handed it to my older nephew and he said “Let me guess, ten dollars?” I thought to myself, “Won’t you be surprised next year when you get nothing!”

I don’t remember any particular moment or trauma around Santa Clause, but I do remember having problems with the Easter Bunny.

Santa was everywhere—on TV, in the stores, on advertisements. The Easter Bunny, however, posed a dilemma. I just couldn’t imagine a big rabbit hopping into our house (how did he get in there? Break the lock?) and leaving an Easter basket on the dining room table.

I remember my parents telling us as kids that Santa had outsourced some of his distribution because of the growth in the population.

Question for the class: who is older, Broomie or Santa? Discuss.
