I got a wrong-number message on my answering machine one time. Some guy begging for forgiveness and ending with a promise to never call again if he didn’t get a response. I would have called and explained the situation, but he didn’t leave a number.
I got a call on my answering machine from a woman telling the woman she was calling that she’d be late. Wonder how that turned out when she finally arrived.
When I was a teen I once got a call. When I picked up the receiver I could hear two girls from my class talking to each other. They weren’t aware that I was listening. This was all so strange that I felt scared and put the receiver back on the phone after a short while listening.
Back in my university days I would often study at night in one of the engineering buildings. There was a pay phone in the hall nearby that seemed to be the fake number girls would give guys who pestered them for a phone number.
1) It was tempting to give them some story like “sorry, Cindy just left for her honeymoon”.
2) There were times when the doofus on the other end would refuse to believe me when I told them they had reached the pay phone in the engineering building. At least once a guy threatened to “kick your a$$”. I think I responded with “ok, I confess. This is Suzie’s dorm. Come over and get me”.
