Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for December 20, 1987
Transcript:
Calvin: Can we get this tree, Mom? Can we? Mom: I don't know, Calvin. It's awfully expensive. Calvin: Yeah, but just think how much loot would fit under it! Dad! Come bring the Christmas tree Mom and I picked! It's a great one! Dad: This year I thought we'd just keep the tree in the garage. Calvin: In the garage?! Dad: Sure, you can go out and look at it any time you like, and it saves all the trouble of decorating it. Calvin: We're not going to decorate it?!!! Dad: Why bother? We just take it all down in two weeks on Christmas day. If you get a present.... Calvin: If I get a present?! Dad: You can take it out to the garage to open, and pretend the tree has lots of lights and..... Calvin: Mommmm! Mom: I know somebody who's going to get a lot of coal in his stocking, buster. Dad: This season gets less jolly every year..

Probably ‘cause of the salamander incident.

This gives an inkling of where Calvin got his imagination and mischevious nature. After seeing the first two panels, though, I can’t help but wonder what kind of Charlie Brown tree mom had in mind – the thing’s no taller than she is, and she’s concerned about the price?

Meh, see, I’m the one who convinces my dad of these things. I once got him to believe that all passenger trains have morgues. Y’know, in case someone dies in transit.
Poor dad.

No choice of words is poorer than “if you get a present” during Christmas season…

Feh, I wouldn’t have filled his stocking with coal, he might have set fire to the house. Fill it with notes with lists of chores he has to do in order to exonerate himself, and then we’ll see if he gets anything on January 6 (Day of the Epiphany). Failing that, getting no presents would have very much straightened him out.

Mom, you took Calvin there to buy a tree.
What do you mean that small tree is expensive.
You know they all will be around the same price per foot when you went there.
