Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for June 28, 1995
Transcript:
Calvin: What does it mean when someone says to "give it the ol' college try"? Dad (Calvin's father): It means you join your friends, get some cheap beer, order a pizza, and forget about tomorrow. Mom (Calvin's mother): That's not what it means! Dad (Calvin's father): Where did you go to college? Calvin: Never mind.

old college try A wild and desperate attempt to make a play. Sometimes the term carries a hint of showboating. Babe Ruth (Babe Ruth’s Own Book of Baseball, 1928) defined “giving it the old college try” as “playing to the grandstand or making strenuous effort to field a ball that obviously cannot be handled.”
