What’s the point of being paid, if you’re not alive to enjoy it?

Wow, cool. You must be having fun exploring the world. (And all I intended by my remark was to introduce you to the weird, wonderful world of SF cons, if you haven’t already hooked up with them: http://www.locusmag.com/Conventions.html )

bmonk also said: …I remembered “grok”, but I also remembered “Grooks”, pithy poems with associated drawings by the Dane Piet Hein….

and grazer said: …Once again I learned something useful from reading the comics…..

I had to look up “Grooks” and Piet Hein, which led me to superellipses. Purty! I keep trying to stop reading the comments because I don’t really have the computer-time to spare, but I can’t quit because y’all keep directing me to little goodies like this. Never let anybody tell you that comics ain’t ejumakayshonabobbel.

Burgundy said: …I was easily as shy as you in my youth (still am….

There’s hope. Several years ago I achieved an insight into exactly why I couldn’t bear to be stared at (it wasn’t intrinsic to me at all; I was carrying somebody else’s neurosis); and after walking around stunned for three days I came out of it rarin’ for an audience. I now enjoy public speaking, though I don’t get many opportunities.

Aargh. Either I gotta stop commenting, or I gotta keep up daily.

Yes Calvin I remember the thrill of suicide gulch.

When I was a kid there was a steep, narrow gully about a kilometer from where we lived. Half way down there was a 45 degree turn that you had to make or hit a large tree. Sometimes we made it, sometimes we bailed, sometimes we hit. No one ever got hurt too bad.

The last time I was back there I was disappointed. Someone had built the Olympic Stadium over the top of our best sledding spot.

What the heck do you mean Calvin with a breakneck speed ? How many miles an hour ? Or do you mean sledding at Mach one ?

    Calvin is quoting George Mallory.

From Wikipedia: Mallory is famously said to have replied to the question “why do you want to climb Mt. Everest?” with the retort: “because it is there”, which has been called “the most famous four words in mountaineering”

@Doctortoon - Every time I hear that “…thrill of victory and the agony of defeat..” I can still see the skier crashing through the large billboard next to the ski jump on The Wide World of Sports.

lol ive personally been down suicide gulch myself on one of those ‘ripskik’ skateboards. & i have the scars to prove it too. i sped down the road and slammed into a concrete curb. first time i did two consecutive frontflips before hitting the ground. i still go down sometimes though.
