Dad’s suggestion is actually proof that he cares a great deal. He realizes that his suggestion is not possible but at the same time it expresses his desire to protect Calvin from harm while still preserving the myth of the unemotional male.

They should train the tigers in a zoo a lot better.

I can’t understand why Dad’s hair is still black. My family turned my hair grey before I was 30.

Stake sounds good. Maybe some chips and BBQ sauce.

Hobbs’ compatriots, while being magnificent animals are very poor conversationalists

Hobbes could do better by talking to his real compatriots! Not everyday the family goes to a zoo.

I love Calvin’s vocabulary and the use of the word, “compatriots.” My favorite strip remains the one where Calvin used the word “epiphany.” Here are the quotes:

Calvin: “They say the secret of success is being at the right place at the right time. But since you never know when the right time is going to be, I figure the trick is to find the right place, and just hang around!” Hobbes: “Being with you, it’s just one epiphany after another.” Calvin: “And if the right place is in front of the drugstore, we could read comic books while we wait!”

Don’t forget his melting snowman “art” that “speaks to the horror of our own mortality, inviting the viewer to contemplate the evanescence of life.”

Looks like it was Hobbes who said epiphany not Calvin. But being with Hobbes will help Calvin to have a vocabulary way beyond his years.

Dad’s hair may not be gray, but it may be manifesting itself in other ways that can’t be depicted in cartoons, such as ulcers, hypertension, etc. My advice to Dad: tell Calvin the same thing my mom told me, “Some day you’ll have kids of your own.”

Hobbes probably would have seen the tigers if Calvin didn’t wander off. I don’t think they were quite done with the zoo.

All my prior defenses of Dad and Calvin notwithstanding … this may be the best idea Dad’s had in years. :)

*DT*, I’m trying to remember a similar story about Gen. Douglas MacArthur and his father. Someone said that he used to think the Gen.’s Dad was arrogant - until he met the Gen. (I wouldn’t know, and as far as I understand the Gen. I admire him, but it could well be true.)

That’s the main reason I never married or had children, I didn’t want any little brats like myself and my brothers. Once was enough. I’ll stick with the kids that have paws and fur, they are the purr-fect kind for me. They might even get along well with Mr. Hoobes.

But remember: Dad’s hair probably hasn’t grayed because Calvin never ages, so apparently neither does Dad.

I was the only one at my 30th class reunion that left the white in my hair. By the next reunion I think it’ll be all white. My husband says he likes my white hair. I’m torn now. What do you all think? Is white hair sexy on a middle-aged women or should I give in to society’s idea of beauty and color it?

Dino-1: I guess that depends on whom, if anyone, you wish to impress. Yourself, your husband, others? “None of the above?”

Dino-1 it all depends on what YOU want to do. trying to impress others seldom works the way we want it to. i still say that the only opinion that matters to me is my own.

When I was a kid, in the ‘40’s, we had a family that actually did tie their kid to the clothesline post. About the only time he went out in the neighborhood was when his father sent him out to beat up another kid and then be rewarded with an ice cream cone. One day I was the targeted victim and I, quite by accident, knocked the assailant down and into a big mud puddle. His dad came over to “talk” to my dad. In the end, all they really did was talk and I was never chosen to be the victim again. It was really no different then than it is now; we only like to think it was.

    Interesting comparison indeed, Susan001!

Temperamentally speaking, Calvin is a Catalyst (probably ENFP) and Dennis is an Improviser (I don’t have enough of a handle on Dennis to be more specific). Calvin could run circles around Dennis mentally, while Dennis could run circles around Calvin physically. (I partly say this because as a child I was the Calvin to at least one Dennis I knew.)

It’s therefore really a matter of what kind of mischief we’re talking about. But then, most of us watching both strips probably realized that without my say-so. :)

For a dedicated husband, you are sexy. I’d go with natural color, in this case white–but then we (monks) aren’t into beauty and similar forms of vanity.

Calvin’s father: “,,,we’re just going to tie you to a stake in the yard…” The “stakes” are high, as far as keeping Calvin safe is concerned. I think Calvin’s father is not only concerned about keeping Calvin safe. He wants to preclude the exasperation, vexation, and annoyance…inconvenience even, associated with Calvin’s being lost. Calvin’s mother: “Thank goodness.” Who or what is goodness? Could it possibly be God?

Dino-1: Putting my 2-cents in, I’d say buy a wig. This way you can impress your classmates every 5 years or whenever you get together, and the other 1825 days (365 days x 5 yrs) you can keep your natural color, which your husband loves and should make you feel special.
