After a pep talk from Calvin surly is the best you can hope for… and then you die.

Dad must be quicker on the trigger… he should’ve answered something like “if I go to work and earn money I can buy me lots of candies and cartoons”…

See, Calvin does pay attention in school…how many 6- 8 year olds even know what surly means, let alone use it in a sentence! Heck, I teach 14 year olds who don’t know it’s a word!

Linda Arney, Calvin’s vocabulary is extensive, but sometimes his grammar is lacking. He used ‘sure’ instead of surely in the last panel. Do you accuse some of your 14 year olds of being surly and they don’t understand what you are saying?

Calvin is the coolest kid ever. My family is forgetting about Calvin and Hobbes. They used to read it in the papers when I was little, my brother read it, but now whenever I show it to them, they just look at it and just shrug or say meh or something. I’m so sad. I’m thinking: “You read this before me. Some people are just jealous of Bill Watterson’s amazing comic strip

    boy123:

I think that Andy was being a little facetious here. I’m sure he absolutely knows that Calvin’s dad is a grown man.

With the “candies and cartoons” comeback, dad would have turned the tables on Calvin’s smart alecky attitude, saying that because he has a job, he can buy all the candies and cartoons he wants … which are things that Calvin loves but because he’s a 6-year-old boy with a very small allowance, they’re harder to come by for him.

Kids like Calvin are why I question that the child labor laws are a good idea - as they are written. (I’m all for education, I’m just not for letting kids goof off, but unless you have your own business, the government won’t let them work until they’re a teenager - even in the summer. By that time, most of them have the expectation they are entitled to goof off while someone else supports them.)

I’d let Calvin know he doesn’t get $$$ to go to school & will 1 day have to work 40 plus hrs a week as well. By then the retirement age should be about 80

Since when would Calvin read a novel cover to cover dad? That tells you he’s not sincere! Ignore him!
