I couldn’t help but notice something about yesterday’s flap. SensibleMan had just signed up, had only posted one comment, yet somehow knew that marg is (almost) always first. Something tells me he is actually a regular. But if so, what could be the motive?

Regarding Calvin, it is interesting that he himself is often mean to others. Wouldn’t it be nice if he took this incident as an opportunity to look in the mirror. Of course, then he’d have to grow, and that would be the end of the strip - oh wait - it did end. He did grow. He’s probably a great guy now!

thebird55, I noticed that, too. I guess you can read the comics without an account, but why would anyone sign up just to attack someone?

I too appreciate Marg’s presence on the funny pages 8^].

Sensible man’s post was anything but sensible.

The amount of folks prepared to stand up for Marg is wonderful but I wonder how many would stand up as fast if the bullying were in person in the workplace or in the schoolground.

If the behaviours displayed in this forum were replicated in real life, we’d never have a bullying problem.

I have no idea what will happen next for Calvin, but i’m cheering for him! Hope you get your truck back Little Guy.

    Good Morning Everyone:

    Two Comments today:

I read the comic every day and I love the comments. I don’t comment very often, because by the time I get on there is often little left to be said. I did not get to read yesterday’s comments and just went back and read them now. I think the guy who made the comment about Marg is a jerk. If he doesn’t like seeing the comments in his view he could have the strip e-mailed to him and not have to read the comments at all. Even though I don’t comment very often I feel like I know y’all.

As to Why Watterson gave up the comic. As I remember, it was due to stylistic differences. The Syndicates changed the rules on the size of the boxes in the (I think) Sunday comics. This meant that all the boxes had to be about the same size. This meant that like the comic last Sunday, Calvin could not have the big pictures like they often did on Sunday. Rather than have to stifle his creativity he decided to discontinue the comic. I was saddened by the decision but I understood it.

Calvin’s soliloquy in Panel 3 is particularly appropriate considering we are finally through the US Election cycle. Maybe some people will start being nicer to one another.

Marg, I hope you don’t feel at all daunted by yesterday’s (I refrain myself to a simple bleep) criticism.

I have long enjoyed your comments with most comics that I read every morning. ——————————————————————————-

Hobbes, now would be a good time to just pounce on Calvin and make him forget his troubles…. and toughen him up a bit in the process.

(To any who might wonder at me, Yes, I have read nearly the entire Calvin and Hobbes series, but I enjoy nothing more than approaching something good in light as if I had never seen or read in the first place)

    In Part…

I know these are all repeats, but I don’t remember them, so they are all new to me. Does Calvin ever get his truck back? Does he become a bully to that nerdy kid?

If you’re ever able to pay the small fee to become a GENIUS member you’ll then be able to go back and read each and every comic ever made starting way back in 1958 Each by date in order of publication. And not only C&H but each and every comic listed on GoComics.

In closing here in the Mountain Time Zone USA the new comic comes out around 11:20 pm. And all that can be said about Ms. Marg… being first is if you don’t like it ~~And I Do~~ well who cares what you do… Me, I don’t have a problem with be second or whenever. So Ms. Marg… if you’re not out searching for new samples of… well you know? You keep on keeping on! Thank You So Very Much.

First off, sorry if I came off sounding like a jerk yesterday. I was kind of grateful SensibleMan covered me up.

Second, with regard to Watterson quitting, madampresident12 said it was over stylistic differences- that the Sunday Strips became more constrained with time. It was actually the other way around- originally all the boxes had to be the same size, but after a sabbatical, the syndicate gave Watterson the unbreakable half-page format, which is what we see in the later strips. You can read about this in the 10th anniversary book. If you read recent (-ish) interviews with him, he talks about how he quit because he simply did not want the comic to become stale (this is in the Complete Calvin and Hobbes introduction), and that his interests had shifted (stated in his original letter to editors announcing his retirement)

I am a regular reader but only rarely comment. I enjoy the comments – except for the occasional rant (spam isn’t a comment, so I don’t count it, just flag it).

I started to join the fray yesterday but restrained myself when I remembered my father’s words (from the Quaker side of the family): “If you can’t say something nice about a person, then say nothing at all.” Therefore I remained silent about “Sensibleman” and will continue to do so. On the other hand, Marge, I should have spoken loud and clear in support of you. I apologize for my omission.

Marge, when I don’t see your name (and one of your nifty avatars) at the top of the day’s comments, I miss you and pray that you are OK. May you start us off every morning for many mornings to come! Bless you.

“To err is human, to forgive is Divine” . Indeed so. I get the distinct impression that some of the folks posting on this site need to “err” a lot less and forgive more. I find the appellations/accusations flying back and forth both innapropriate and unneeded, not to mention throughly boring…..

Well SensibleMan’s comments are gone (which I think is for the best )but I want to say that after 2 years of reading comments here that it is a pleasure to see Marg’s comments at the top of the page. For me, she is the Oracle of this strip and I feel the World is off its tilt when I don’t see those great avatars of hers at the top. I willmake this comment about today’s strip AND some people in general: People can sure be butt-heads! Hope to hear from you FIRST thing tomorrow Marg and all the rest of you true fans.
