That’ll give you something through which to drag your name, Calvin… Isn’t that right, gayfatnakedvet (from 3 days ago)? :o) No offence is intended, Dogsniff; i’m just kidding with the grammar alteration. It’s just a tip, but you may keep the change!
gayfatnakedvet (4 days ago),
Hi, Puddleglum2! Right you are!
@Dogsniff,
The point relates to the controversy about ending a sentence a preposition with (with a preposition).
This was when Dad wouldn’t spring for a new toaster. fanof41 commended your comment. You replied: @fanof41: thanks, think that one was “missed” by the masses.
Puddleglum2 said (2 days ago),
Dogsniff, Maybe the “masses” are too busy osculating to raise a toast to your clever toast comment.
That relates to Hobbes’ comment from 4 days ago “I’ll bet that’s why they close their eyes when they smooch.”
I commented that Calvin probably would rather osculate than smooch. Smooch and osculate have pretty much the same meaning.
I hope that covers it adequately. After this, I won’t assume that almost everyone reads all the comments every day. Maybe sometimes I need to explain and clarify my comments more fully, but I do try to keep it brief, terse, and succinct. Thanks for asking, anyway, I think. Whew! :o)
wow puddleglum2..u r quite an observer…more than the comic strip ur eyes are on the comments…chill buddy…just enjoy the strip…thats what it is meant for……
Gocomo2011,
I enjoy the strip or I wouldn’t be here, but I enjoy and even assimilate many of the comments, too. The strip is often the catalyst for insightful and enlightening comments about many aspects of life and living. We all have various reasons for being here. Apparently, you yourself do more than just read the strip. I think it’s all meant for whatever you want to take from it and try to give to it.
A woman chastised Churchill for ending his his sentences with a preposition, and he replied: Madam, I thank you, but this is the kind of nonsense up with which I will not put …
Love Hobbes’ expression today–especially panel 2. I am hoping that Hobbes (the commentator) will return from his sabbatical next week. Or sometime soon.
Hanshernator For me I had to take basic English and used the Internet for terms. I also sought help with paragraphs and rough draft Essay. I hope your serious on this.
A preposition is a word that links a noun, pronoun or gerund to other words. They can have a variety of meanings:
Direction- He’s going TO the shops
JAMEJO,
Your retort from Churchill led me to take closer note of the final words from Gocomo2011, “…that’s what it’s meant for…”
…that’s for what it is meant…
The bigger kids in our school would keep pushing us higher and higher till the smaller ones screamed.
Finally the teacher got involved saved us,but I look back at all the fun we had happily.
You guys worry about your English, if I were you I would worry more about all us seniors reading comics every day.
Nabu - these days we are far more consumed with matters of the internal to explore the external, particularly since most people regard our reality as having been produced randomly, and their interest level is at “…who gives a rat’s patoot…” . Noticed in Sunday’s cartoon that Calvin regarded what he was seeing as “creation”, which, in my book, puts him light years ahead of many adults…..
gayfatnakedvet,
There were alterations, but not altercations, at least as far as I was concerned. I just like to have a little fun (hopefully not at someone else’s expense) with some of the comments.
BTW (sorry), how does “using a rabbit and a log…” enable you to explain a preposition? “What’s up, Doc?”
Ending a sentence with a preposition has been acceptable for some time now. Regarding comments about our interests in space exploration, have you seen the pix coming in from the various satellites and telescopes? We’ve gotten pictures in the last month of the surface of Mercury for the first time. The Space Station is also amazing.

…ending sentences with prepositions. I recall a James Thurber exchange in the Columbus hospital (from “The Psychosemanticist Will See You Now”):
“I came here to get something in my eye out.”
“You couldn’t have picked a better place to get something in your eye out in.
