Andrea—(Honey)—welcome to American culture. “Miller Time” refers to after a hard day’s work when it’s time for a cold beer. Miller’s Beer just happened to come up with that great slogan first… which is great because Millers is a great beer!

Happy Thanksgiving to all those celebrating.

When did they stop using that slogan? I’m 38 and can vividly remember it, along with the “Where’s the Beef” that Wendy’s has revived.

Happy Thanksgiving! To those who don’t celebrate it, it’s nice to hear from you, as I always enjoy learning what country the posters on this site are from. Calvin and Hobbes has a lot of universal appeal, except on days like today when it’s hard to figure out the reference to American culture of the past. Here is one of the earlier “Miller Time” commercials. It was made in 1977, and today’s Calvin Hobbes strip is from 1986. By having Calvin describe his exhausting day, Bill Watterson is parodying the style of the earliest Miller Time ads, where a man works all day at a physically demanding job; and then comes Miller Time, where enjoying a cold Miller Beer with friends is his reward for putting in a hard day’s work. Each commercial had the same format but it would describe a different type of job.Click here: Miller Beer Commercial (1977)In 1980 or 1981, comedians Dick Orkin and Bert Burdis did a parody of “Miller Time” commercials on the Tim Conway Show. They were working hard all day under the hot sun, from dawn to dusk, painting the line down the middle of the highway. They kept stopping for “Tiller Time” periodically, and as the day wore on, the line became more and more crooked, until eventually they were painting it in circles and up over cars.

A couple weeks ago here in Tucson, there was a cartoon in the local paper showing a football player limping away (the U of A had a horrible football season) and a basketball player happily running in. The caption was “It’s Miller Time” referring to Sean Miller, the basketball coach, but of course also referencing the old beer ad campaign.

@Dogsniff: I think what bmonk was trying to say was, suppose somebody before you posted something on the new site but you never saw it because it was already deleted before you went on to do your posting. Then that person would hold the record for being the first person ever deleted on the new site, but you would never know it, and you would assume that you were the first person ever deleted. I hope you appreciate all of my efforts to provide this vital input to try to help burst your balloon. :>)
