man has natural tendencies, not good or bad until told by their culture. Sin in one culture is not sin in another culture. Democrats, Republicans, prostitutes from Oregon- just weird comments you guys.
The issue of sin is a difficult discussion. Sin comes from what we do wrong in relation to each other and God. If we are born sinners then there is no personal accountability as we did nothing. On the other hand, if one is not born into sin, the the door is left open that one might not sin and thus be perfect which is heresy to the church. In the end the only solution is that we are not born into sin (a body that dies 10 minutes later is not sent to hell). But our nature being what it is makes it inevitable that we do sin at some point. Then again we get int to age of accountability of when does God hold us accountable. The Bible speaks of such a concept. BTW, baptism does not save. It does not matter in the end if you are baptized or not, faith is what saves. If baptism was a requirement for salvation, I think God would have made it more clear about the necessity and the method. In the end, God seems to let us have some choices how to express our relationship. Now let the Holy War debate begin. (which is the saddest thing of all).
@Perkycat: Thanks, and glad you enjoy the comics. You are becoming an “old-timer” on this site. Or at least a medium-timer. I like reading your comments because you seem like someone with a positive outlook who enjoys life.
@Hobbes,Apparently, Hobbes thinks that Calvin is not able to understand and deal with something easily and successfully, and Calvin just proved it.Btw, I wish my library was as organized as your system and store of information on cartoons and other things.
@Puddleglum: That reminds me of a quotation. Just a minute, while I find it here in my system…….. Here it is:A neat desk is the sign of a sick mind.Oh, wait, that wasn’t it……….
This doctrine is a great example of the sort of fear tactics that organized religion uses to control people. The whole idea of “sin” was a creation of the deuteronomists who rewrote the older myths that became the bible with the intent of coercing people into supporting the then-current political regime and resisting Assyrian invasion. But having discovered how powerful that control is, and the pleasures and profits that came with it, later men weren’t about to give it up. Perhaps some even believed it as a sort of self-justification.
I don’t doubt it being a true story at all. There’s a lot of weird, bigoted people walking around out there that don’t like being told what to do, think, say or believe but don’t seem to mind telling other people what THEY should do, think, say or believe . . . usually all in the name of religion!!! :-(
I can’t believe all the argument about whether humans sin or not and why on a comic strip following the life of a six-year old boy. however, that is not what bugs me. what bugs me are the people that are so insecure about who they are or what they believe that the call others bigots because they happen to believe differently, be it politically or religiously. please people, disagree all you want but dont degrade others who disagree with you.
Until the late 50s, early 60s, children were socialized by adults to adult society. Since barring accident or tragedy we spend much more of our lives as adults than children, this seems like the sensible way to go.
It is pointless to ‘socialize children to their peers’. Either children socialize very naturally with their peers or they do not; those who do don’t need any coaching, those who don’t are more likely to be injured by being pressured to socialize than helped. Peer socialization seems to reinforce all the negativities of childhood; the bullying, the envy, lying, cheating, stealing. Because they have not been properly socialized to the larger society, they develop no inhibitions and some times, no consciences of any sort whatever.
My daughter never saw the inside of a public school until she went to college where she did very well. All through her childhood, people were concerned that I was ‘isolating’ her. The reality is that there is no way to isolate a child in this culture, short of moving well off the grid and never leaving. And even if that were the case, Australia seems to have done very well with its Outback children, who were raised in that kind of isolation. What I wanted to say about this was that any time I signed my child up for summer activities in the Community, there would be a conversation that went something like this:
Instructor: Your daughter is such a wonderful child. She gets along so well, with everyone, all the different age groups and the adults! It’s such a pleasure to have her in our classes.
Me: Well, I’m really glad to hear it. She’s enjoying them a lot. She’s a home schooled child, so I like to be able to do this for her.
Instructor: Oh!! But home schooled children are so isolated!
The last conversation I had along these lines, when my daughter was about sixteen took me to task for depriving her of a prom experience. Oddly, I thought that schools were there to educate, and actually, if she had desperately wanted a prom, and could find a date, the local school would have had to accomodate her.
Most home schoolers hear these criticisms as long as they keep their children out of school, whether for a term or two or for the child’s entire school experience. The only valid criticism I have heard of homeschooling is that home schooled kids tend to be ‘naive’.
I’d say there’s some truth in that. But my position is that school age children don’t actually need to need to know more than their parents about rape, mayhem, homicide, and other brutalities, and that’s where I note the naivete is operating. Most home schoolers have really restrictive television watching policies, if they watch television at all.
It may be one of the best kept open secrets in the country; home schooling really is very effective for most people.
We just celebrated the Infinite Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the only person good enough to take on and pay for all the sins ever committed or to be committed (hence, “Infinite”)…All it takes is Faith, Repentance (not just feeling guilty but determining to refrain from sin), Baptism, and receiving the Holy Ghost…and then your slate is wiped clean and life starts anew from that point. And. if you err, there is the weekly ordinance of repenting partaking of the Sacrament on the Sabbath day. However, one cannot plan to commit a sin thinking all they have to do is repent; God shall not be mocked and he knows our thoughts. True happiness comes from following the teachings of Jesus Christ, doing our best to be as much like Him as we can…
Here is the reality that some believe. Adam sinned and corrupted human nature, so all are born with a corrupted nature. This is called original sin. And they need salvation from this. This original corruption is the explanation for so many problems around us. But God doesn’t abandon us, there is a savior in our midst. Jesus is the answer.
