Too bad for Calvin that this cartoon is from 1993. Today, he could of just cut and pasted from Wikipedia.

I watched my grandson write a paper, Split screen, facts on one side, essay on the other. I asked him what did he learn. He looked at me like I was nuts!

He’s already done the hard part – the thinking stage. Writing will take no time at all. …………But then there’s the drawing………………

Learning to paraphrase facts and how to get those facts is what school is all about. Having a split screen on the computer is just a natural progression. In order to do math properly, you have to understand what you are doing. Some thought that using a slide rule was cheating.

Learning how to use tools properly is what school is all about. Carving a dovetail joint or learning how to use a jig is still learning and does the job properly.

good schooling teaches us how to use reference material and the tools of the trade properly.

Plagiarism would refer to a large part of the original. Using 3 sources and putting bits and pieces together is what it is all about.

I do think he isn’t doing this anymore. He is now at the University of Colorado Boulder majoring in Engineering. Reality check!

The mud monster and I (she graduated from High School in 2004) often finished “papers” at 2200 or later that were due the next morning…. Naturally, my wife would come into the room and scream about it, which was very good at slowing us down…. No split-screen tricks then, although enough money would have handled that. (Both of my “big” machines now have monitors wide enough to do that without additional cost.)

It was always kind of funny to watch my wife….

Becka would write the papers, and I’d type & spell-check, with a little help from me. By the time she went away to college, she was pretty good at it, although I occasionally had to use GoToMyPC to help.

When I was her age, I typed many a paper on a Remington manual portable under a 60-watt bulb in the basement. Being able to drive out to the former day job office and use a good electric was heaven….
