Calvin, don’t ask Hobbes to write a letter of reference on your behalf to Santa.

That’s how you do it: You present YOUR case and make someone else go through the trouble of disputing it.

That’s a cure for hiccups, Calvin – not suppressing laughing so long it hurts.

This one strip is great for so many reasons beyond the joke, which is a classic gag in use for centuries. The simple style of the drawing; no color, just pen and ink. The faces he draws for both characters are just outstanding; expressive, funny in a way that’s appropriate to the setting (like panel 3), and economically drawn, too. The joke plays so seamlessly with these two using a minimum of dialogue. Just a brilliantly constructed strip from the inside out.

hah-hahhhhh- Hobbes’s face when he busts up, and then his close-eyed smile as he leaves. He’s just SO amused by Calvin’s blatant lying.

I just love tigers trying to hide laughter. It’s just so rare to spot one doing it in the wild.

Forget a glass of water…Calvin’s about ready to give him a cattle prod. And you don’t want to know where.

Calvin’s in training for his dream job when (if) he grows up: Presidential Press Secretary. (The name to watch for, since I’m not sure we’ve been told his sur(ly)name, is Calvin N. Hobbes)
