The joy and innocence of childhood, especially in the West. Once you’ve experienced bombs dropping, it’s hard to play soldiers again.

Green pine cones that generally fall during a hurricane can be deadly. They’re like huge green bullets.

We used to draw up, in the dirt, our “battle field”. Then take turns mining the other side with equal amounts of illegally obtained fire crackers with buried fuses. Then all came back and set up their GI Joe armies, green men, jeeps, half-tracks, Howitzers and tanks. Then take turns lighting fuses. Great fun, when you’re young enough to not understand what you’re really playing at. The M-80’s were a blast….

Oh no! Call the Society of Woke, because if he is playing with soldiers, the next thing will be playing with a stick and then he’ll want a bb gun. Oh my! We have to stop it now!

We get several thousand pine cones in the yard every year. The squirrels ignore them.

To bad Gandalf isn’t there. They could be flaming pine cones. Though with this past fire season we may have had quite enough of pine cones of fire. Happy Birthday LOTR.

Squirrels are amazingly accurate with black walnuts still in the hull when a dog gets too annoying.

When I was on my first combat training maneuver in the Air Force, we managed to come up behind a machine gun (firing blanks). At that point, we discovered the previous class had removed the firing pins from our M-1 rifles to make them easier to reassemble (a lesson in inspection by itself). We could not fire our blanks, so we had to throw pine cones at the gunner before we could get his attention and capture him.

That direct hit by the pinecones could be painful. But seriously, what’s a few pinecones between friends. Love that sheepish smile on the feline.

A big enough pine cone falling from a very tall tree actually dented my dad’s car once.
