Sleepmates, forever…..

Hobbes: Strong predator by day, comforting friend by night.

Inventing Hobbes is a great comfort for Calvin.

I’ve seen people in recent years criticize C&H for being too mean-spirited for their taste, but I think that, like with Peanuts, the mean-spirited moments make the really wholesome strips like this one stand out more.

Carol King would agree about these Calvin’s last words.

Awww, this is sweet! Next—Mom will have to pry him out of bed and off to school!

That’s kind of a brilliant observation — Nighttime is dark so you imagine your fears with less distraction.

Hobbes is actually dreaming about how to ambush Calvin the next time he comes home from school.

In the 50’s, I had a felt covered dog penny bank. I loved it

Felines are always so cute when they’re sleeping! No matter what kind, lion, tiger, cougar, cheetah, or just plain kitty cat, they’re adorable when they’re sleeping.

I feel that way about my dog Shilo. You never feel alone or lonely with a furry friend. ☺♥

Aww, this is so adorable. Nothing comforts a child like a stuffed toy, or a dog or cat at night, especially when you’re scared in the night.

Today’s marvellous strip brings home two of the inspirations for Hobbes. Watterson has explained that he sees Hobbes as “more feline than human” and that he largely based him on his pet cats – especially a cat named Sprite who used to greet him when he came home by pouncing on his leg and clinging onto it. Another inspiration for Hobbes was Watterson’s brother Tom. The scenes of Calvin and Hobbes in bed together shows the brotherly side of their relationship.

Many tourists that come to Iceland wish it were dark so they could go to sleep. It doesn’t get dark (civil twilight – dark at the horizon) here from May 19 to July 25. We don’t get nautical twilight (dark overhead) from April 26 to August 14. Astronomical twilight (the entire sky is dark) doesn’t happen from April 9 to September 2.

Amen.

Even Cal has those moments of revelation that make our lives seem better. They just don’t happen often enough.

Waterson’s a genius.

Calvin did love Hobbes when they were young. I wonder what happens to Hobbes when Calvin gets older.

When I go to bed at night, I lie on my back with my left arm in a 90-degree crook out from my side so that one of my cats can curl up them. He doesn’t stay there all night—I move soon after I fall asleep—but he does help me get to sleep.

It is good to have a furry friend, or two, or several.

And so we see that the imagination is a two sided sword. First it scares Calvin with all the dangers he can imagine then he is comforted by the imaginary friend who will stand and protect him.

one day it will be a GROSS girl that Calvin knows so well.

My wife is my best friend.

My “best friend” and I were introduced on my first birthday. Bear sits on a little chair in a corner of our bedroom. He’s earned his rest.

…especially it that best friend happens to be a man-eating tiger.

Being a Sunday, you don’t have to imagine what’s next, like monsters under the bed. LOL.

Calvin reminds me a Trump. Both need re-education!

I sleep with an iPod Touch under my pillow. I set a timer for 30 minutes and listen to old Jack Benny programs. If necessary, I can extend the time with a shake of the device. This way I know where the voices in my head are coming from. Nice, soothing voices.

This is a sweet and heartwarming Sunday strip. And yeah, I do love sleeping animals.

Well, that explains why things are so scary for me.

Calvin seems oddly worrying about things way past his age. I never had an issue worrying about such things at six. It was a simpler, kinder world as a child.

I think Watterson did this toon about the time his own cat died.

C&H was pretty darn good in general, and this is one of the very best.

A true friendship and a true way to end a Sunday strip.

And another classic that spent many years on my fridge. Thank you for this.
