I’m sorry to see Cathy go, but why? All my favorite cartoonists drop out early. Calvin and Hobbs, The Far Side, Fox Trot….. In the olden days, the cartoonists drew til the day they died!

edcircusitch: Let’s see… I believe both Watterson and Larson decided to end their strips while they were in peak form, rather than sliding down to a mediocre “gag a day” strip. Bill Amend didn’t completely quit; he scaled back to one Sunday strip a week (no dailies), and it was probably for a similar reason–look at the last few Fox Trot collections and it seems the dailies were starting to get repetitive. Since his semi-retirement, the Sunday strips seem to have more bite. Then there’s Berke Breathed (Bloom County, Outland, Opus…), who I think quits and returns, quits and returns, quits and… because he’s just really good at thinking up endings for his comics. Wouldn’t be surprised if he comes back yet again… when he thinks of a cool ending for his next strip.
