And leave it to women to think that any straight man even CARES about such trivial things as a new pair of shoes.
Cathy should have simply gotten straight to the point and invited Irving to go out to dinner with her. The new shoes and outfit that she wants to show off are irrelevant to him – in fact, odds are that he won’t even say a word about them at dinner unless she makes the mistake of asking him what he thinks of them. No man with half a functioning brain cell is even going to touch THAT question!
If you want to go to dinner with Irving, just be direct. If you want someone to admire your shoes, talk with a girl friend. Seriously, don’t try to mix up people with different interests and stop playing games!
My boyfriend notices everything, so I can’t agree with this comic. I have dated others who didn’t notice a thing but it’s definitely fun to have a man to share fashion with, even if he doesn’t quite understand it! :)
I don’t notice either. I have a friend and I think she had a hair cut recently, but I’m not sure because I don’t remember what her hair looked like.
While I like wearing clothes that I think look good on me, I (provided they are fairly cheap, easy to care for, and comfy) I seldom notice what other people wear, even when I try, I get distracted and forget.
I’m sorry all you gals are dating/living with the wrong kind’a guy; I read the strip to have “a better insight” - and I’m straight… Women were not made to be understood; they were made to be admired and loved. ‘Nuff said.
You guys are missing the point. Irving does not believe that the reason she is asking him to dinner is to have an occasion to wear her new shoes & justify their purpose. The issue is not whether he cares about the new shoes, the issue is that he is mistakenly dismissing her true motivation as a ploy.
Since shoes are not a subject of interest for him as a guy, he assume she is using them as an excuse & is trying to get her to tell him the truth. But she has told him the truth.
The problem is that men lack empathy. If something isn’t important to them, it isn’t important, period. A woman can accept & understand that something that isn’t important to her is important to someone else. For example, a woman may not care about the outcome of a sports game, and think it is stupid & pointless to care, but she will believe her boyfriend when he tells her the reason he is upset is because his team lost. She won’t say, “What’s really wrong?”
Often when I am angry at my boyfriend & tell him why, he’ll ask, “What are you really angry about?” The thing he’s done (or not done) to make me angry seems so trivial to him that he can’t believe it is the source of my anger. But it is. Just because something isn’t important to him does not mean it isn’t important to me. Irving is demonstrating exactly that type of frustrating male behaviour in this strip.
But again, why in the world would Irving even care about showing off Cathy’s new shoes? Men simply don’t do that sort of thing (i.e., dress just to show off), so naturally we’d dismiss that as a valid reason for a woman wanting to go out with us.
At the same time, we don’t engage in the kind of gameplay that Cathy frequently does – you ladies have no idea how much that annoys us – and since, as I noted above, men don’t dress just to show off, of course Irving is assuming that Cathy is just engaging in her usual annoying brand of game playing, and letting her know that he doesn’t appreciate it.
No, if Cathy wants to take Irving out to dinner so that she can show off her new shoes and outfit, all she has to say is, “Irving, how’d you like to go out to dinner with me tonight?” She doesn’t have to say anything about why she REALLY wants to go out with him; she only needs to ask him directly. The rest will take care of itself.

Ok, for once maybe he is justified in his annoyance with her.
