I think Irving is just using Vivian “missing” Electra as an excuse so that he doesn’t appear “weak” and “unmanly” by admitting the real truth of the situation: which is that he likes Cathy and has missed seeing her . . . at least that’s what I HOPE he’s really trying to say anyhow!!!!! ;-)
