Cathy: Hi, Mom. Mom on phone: I don't like it when you do that. Cathy: Do what? Mom: Say "Hi, Mom" before I've even said it's me. Cathy: The caller ID says it's you. Mom: I know. It's eroding a lifetime of psychic training! You're supposed to be learning to sense it's me! To just know it's me! Cathy: I do know it's you. Your name pops up on the little screen. Mom: It's supposed to pop up in your brain! Start depending on technology, and your psychic muscles will atrophy! If you can't receive psychically, you can't send psychically... if you can't send psychically, you can't control your children from across the globe... and what kind of future is that for my potential grandbabies?!! Cathy: Sorry, got to go, mom. Irving's beeping in. Mom: One by one, the fine arts are being lost to electronics. Dad: Helen's calling on cell. Are we still pretending our battery's dead?

[Sigh] I can relate to the whole caller I.D. thing, but as usual, this nutty bunch of characters takes the whole thing to another level entirely.
And as always, that’s why I love this strip.

Cathy’s mom might be onto something, though. By depending more and more on technology, we do lose our ability to listen to our instincts.

Count me in as yet another person who doesn’t answer their phone if they don’t recognize the number calling (and sometimes even when I do recognize it — LOL!!!). Thankfully, though, that has mostly stopped since we got rid of our landline last year (which didn’t have caller I.D.) to go cellular only and since very few people have those two numbers, the peace and quiet from all those annoying calls (especially the weekly calls from “Heather (or Rachel) with Cardholder Services” and “Windows Technical Support”) is just beyond blissful!!!!!

In the years before caller ID, my grandmother’s sister used to call every morning about the same time. My mom started answering the phone “Good morning, Aunt Lu!” That is, until the day it was my orthodontist’s office calling to reschedule an appointment.

We have caller ID now, because the number of junk calls was going right through the roof. Seventeen calls between about 8.30 am and 11.45 . . . it’s just too much!
Since I got the phones which not only tell you who’s calling, but prevent the total rubbish from even ringing, I haven’t answered a single junk call.
The peace is wonderful! But I imagine poor Cathy and her family will have to wait a few years yet for those magic phones to become available.
I always know when my daughter phones, though – and without the caller ID. She has a habit of ringing when I’m in the loo . . .

I simply never answer my phone unless someone leaves a message. I have stopped a lot of the pesty calls by notifying the do-not-call registry of violations — can be done online. Funny — my father always thought we were not answering his calls on purpose when we weren’t home — even though I usually did pick up the phone if I was home and knew it was him.
