Cathy: I'm not trying to meet someone. I'm merely enjoying some coffee while I read the sunday paper. I've never sat in a coffee shop reading the paper when I wasn't secretly hoping to meet someone, but I could. Lots of people do it. I could be the sort of person who regularly sits and reads the paper in public. Where are we as a culture if "meeting a soulmate" is a requirement for a successful cup of coffee??! Why must everything have a backup agenda?? I am not expecting! Not plotting! Not looking!! Not thinking! Not thinking! Not thinking! NOT THINKING! On her sixth double latte, a woman finally begins exuding inner contentment. Cathy: I AM NOT INTERESTED, I TELL YOU! DON'T EVEN TRY!!

Maybe she’ll meet someone during her multiple trips to the restroom.

Relax. Have a nice hot cup of tea. There is no agenda in a cup of tea. …not really much flavor either. (Soooo, chocolate-caramel Earl Grey anyone?)

Newspapers did have a comforting self-limitation built in. It was not like today where you basically have an unlimited stack of newspapers at hand wanting to tell you all the bad news in the world. :) :(

Exuding desperation, not “inner contentment”

I wonder if my hair will do that with an extra Diet Pepsi or two?

Whoa! I think I’ll just back away slowly with my hands raised in self-defense … ha.
Quite a look on Cathy in the last panel, too.

no one will talk to you today because they would rather text on their cell phone.

I think the “do” might preclude meeting anyone in their right mind…
