Better to have just a few (really nice) gifts and plan something special to DO. Forget the bills, (if money doesn’t matter), but really, there is little satisfaction with more, more, more. Not to mention…where does it all go??? This is what causes post-Christmas let down feeling. Just ask Lucy Van Pelt.
Last Christmas, I was recovering from eye surgery for a detached retina (in my left eye). I spent most of December face down as much as possible so that the gas bubble they injected in my eye could stay in the right place. I had managed to get my shopping done in my local stores, but I was really happy to be able to go to Christmas vigil at my church on Christmas eve night. This year, I hope to finish my Christmas shopping this week and to have a nice Christmas eve and Christmas day here in DC. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on Christmas (if you can afford to do so, go ahead), but some of us are just glad to have survived another year and be able to be out and about.
When people are dissatisfied with their daily lives, it can lead to a very desperate effort to make holidays special, SPECIAL, SPECIAL to the point of mania.
I wish I could suggest a cure than does not involve making your daily life more interesting, taking up time-consuming hobbies, regular exercise and developing meaningful relationships. Unfortunately, the media offers the unrelenting solution: Spend! Spend! Spend!

Hey, if you’re having fun and are happy — and can pay the bills — just do it.
