I got the “are you awake?” meow at 3 a.m. this morning. I’ve been putting the cat food dishes up on the counter at night to discourage a midnight marauder cat. Sometimes one of my cats needs a little something. She did ask politely and, well, I was awake. So, I got up and put the food down for her and my even more polite cat.
In my head I imagine them staring at the spot where food bowls should be in the darkness.
“You meow.”
“No, you meow.”
“It’s your turn.”
“Yeah, but he likes me more and I want to keep it that way.”
