Please… next time use the Mandarin pronunciation.
Gong xi fa tsai! Hong bao na lai!
(Of course, if I’m Chinese enough to complain about using a dialect, I’m Chinese enough to know that the new year won’t be relevant to this comic for another 12 years…)
Year of the Rabbit AGAIN? Didn’t they do this just 12 years ago?
Did you know that everyone in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and Romania speaks dialects of Latin? Right? Obviously not. That is why it is misleading to talk of the dialects of Chinese. They are mutually-unintelligible languages regardless of their common origin.
The only reason for treating them as one language is that Chinese writing can be read in any of their “dialects”. This is the main reason why China hasn’t converted to the Latin (there’s that word again) alphabet as many in China recommend.
On the other hand, I understand many (most?) children in China are now taught phonetic Latin writing (pinyin) first, before having to memorize the thousands of Chinese characters needed even to read a newspaper. However, I am not up on the latest education news in China, so I’d be happy to hear from any experts out there.
Yes, those are all Latin dialects. Give them an army & they think it’s a language. The written word is a second language. It’s easier to learn a phonetic alphabet & spell everything like it sounds. But peepul hu tok funny rite funny. It’s easier to spread news or imperial decrees if everyone reads & writes the same, reguardless of how they speak.
