The homeless shelter would be less traumatic in the long run. They won’t make you gas the homeless if they’ve been there too long.(Probably shouldn’t have posted that. Wouldn’t want to give the Republicans any ideas…)
They’ve already thought of it… you’ve got Republicans. In Britain we’ve got Tories. In power.
Four years ago our newspapers were full of dissapproving stories about how the Chinese were rounding up Beijing’s homeless for “evacuation and resettlement” during the period of the Olympic Games, and bulldozing former shanty towns and slums to produce clean green spaces so that the world would see how lovely things were in the People’s Republic of China. Our papers also noted how many people had been displaced during the building of the Games stadiums, decried the Chinese tendency to build sham Potemkin Villages, ad hinted that we the British would not do things like that…
Four years on the Games are in London. The stadia have largely been built in East London, a chronic blackspot for unemployment and poverty, and guess what… very few of the jobs have gone to local people. Whole areas of East London have been bulldozed and “beautified” with no new houses arising from the rubble. People have been displaced. And London’s (Tory) mayor and the Head of the Olympic Board (a former Tory cabinet minister are all in favour of the homeless and poverty-stricken being rounded up and eforcibly removed from he area while the Olympics are on, lest their presence stink up the place and give the wrong impression of Britain to visiting foreigners.. the East End survived Hitler, the Luftwaffe, and Joseph Kennedy. Can it survive the Olympics?
The best sort of charity is doing what needs to be done. If you enjoy it, grand, but that’s not the point. “Give ’til it hurts” is in the idiom for a reason.
A Modest Proposal: In New York, they’re harvesting the geese that are disrupting traffic at the airport to feed to the poor. Might the same be done with surplus puppies? Two birds with one stone, so to speak. Donna can smuggle a couple of puppies from the animal shelter under her sweater each day, and maybe she’ll attract the attentions of some eligible man as well. (The Third Bird, I guess.)
Seriously, it’s easier to be kind to puppies than to human beings, because puppies are so much more loveable. But again, that’s kind of beside the point…
I’m sure Donna would work at a "NoKill"Puppy shelter. If not She’d be sneakin’ them home and Mona’d have something to say about that. Also loved the ♥ ’s in her eyes.
