That’s actually the origin of the name, from the German for “heroic.” Heroin was invented to be a “heroic, strong” alternative to morphine, for pain control & cough suppression, WITHOUT the addictive quality of morphine.……Didn’t work, obviously.

Heroin was named that because it was designed to be a cure for morphine addiction.
