On the subject of silent films, even though I am a classic movie lover, I never could bring myself to liking reading movies. I can’t say I like silent films any more than watching films with subtitles.

I don’t know when or what the first “talkie” was, but the oldest film I have in my collection is a 1929 Marx Brothers movie called The Cocoanuts.

The Longest Day had subtitles, too. I gave up reading them. Either I couldn’t get through them fast enough or I felt I was missing something on screen like facial expressions for focusing on the words.

my new favorite radio station.@Citizen GROG!we know you like old movies.every afternoon on saturday they have a program all about movie scores.i think that movie scores are the modern equivalent of classical symphonic music.and a good movie is made into a great movie with a great score.

Star Wars and all its sequels all had great scores, but none of those movies would fall into the category of great movies with great acting in my opinion. What Star Wars had going for it was a great score and outstanding special effects.

Fellow Baby, you said “Some might think* that The Magnificent Seven was a great movie”. There is no doubt in my mind, IT WAS A GREAT MOVIE! And of course, you know what I think about the “Great Escape”. Classics both!

“Gray Lady Down” is on NetFlix right now. Haven’t seen that in “forever”.

happy if you read “Cul de Sac” google it on you tube. Thanks to Sisyphos I came across some short clips of the Cul de Sac gang in cartoon mode, little talking cartoon strips. I actually enjoyed the voices that did Alice, Petey, Dill, Mr. & Mrs. Otterloop, and even Miss Bliss. Very well done! They are only about 30 seconds long but very good!

Fellow Baby I can remember visiting my aunt’s over Thanksgiving and Christmas, and Abbott and Costello I believe had a TV show at that time, which we always watched. I enjoyed them and Laurel and Hardy. And do you remember “Amos and Andy”? I know that in these days and times, it is considered racist, but I just always enjoyed it for what it was, a good comedy program. Those guys were so good in their roles.

Fellow Baby If my memory serves me correctly, the radio version of “Amos and Andy” were white men. The really GOOD “Amos and Andy” were the tv shows with Alvin Childress, Spencer Williams, I can’t remember the actor who played Kingfish, and I do remember Amanda Randolph. I wasn’t born yet when the original episodes aired but it was re-run for a while and I remember it.

Fellow Baby I remember Our Miss Brooks, Eve Arden and Richard Crenna, when it was on TV. Actually I remember them all, on tv, I have heard Fibber McGee and Molly on radio quite a few times, but Duffy’s Tavern doesn’t ring a bell. And the Jack Benny TV show, I grew up on that one too! And the Life of Riley was William Bendix! omg, am I aging myself or what? Hey my parents watched this stuff, remember that!

I wish I could hear more of the stuff, but Radio Classics is dominated by Dramas, Suspense & Westerns. And since I know what William Conrad looks like in real life, I can’t buy him as the voice of Matt Dillon.

Fellow Baby! As Matt Dillon on TV, no, James Arness was perfect for that role. But you have to admit, FOR ONE OF THE BEST speaking voices, William Conrad and James Earl Jones have kind of OWNED those roles! I know there are JUST one or two others who can claim that title but it’s late, I am tired, and I AM OUTTA HERE! Sleep well, Fellow Baby! And I thought YOU were going to bed as well?? HMM? :-D
