RE: TV show discussion last night, I forgot the “Andy Griffith Show” when Barney was still in them, The Beaver, and MASH. That moves the Honeymooners down a little lower on the list.
Stel, no it wasn’t cleared up. But BB brain me, I remember that episode so well. With Mary sitting there at the funeral trying so hard not to laugh, and then just letting loose! Gee that was funny!
I know that Lucille Ball & Carol Burnet were very highly thought of in the business but neither did anything for me. Neither did Don Knots or Jerry Seinfeld.
I have quite a collection of comedies in my video collection, however, I have a number of partial collections for various reasons: I only have the “Coach” years of Cheers. Woody was ok, but I just couldn’t stand the Kirsty Alley years. I only have the Wayne Rogers/McLean Stevenson years of M*A*S*H. Other partial sets include Becker, Coach, Family Ties, Home Improvement & Three’s Company for various reasons.
I have complete sets of The Addams Family, Are You Being Served, Dick Van Dyke, Get Smart, Hogan’s Heroes, I Dream Of Jeanie, Mary Tyler Moore & Soap. I would have complete sets of Beverly Hillbillies, Bob Newhart, Newhart & Petticoat Junction if they’d ever issue the remaining seasons of these shows. I ‘d also own more of Murphy “Mouthy” Brown, but not the last couple of years.
Fellow Baby my quick critique: The Addams Family – loved it as a kid, now, not so much, Are You Being Served – MAGNICICENT, Dick Van Dyke – DITTO, Get Smart – HUBBY LOVES IT, Hogan’s Heroes – AGAIN, HUBBY LOVES, SO DO I, I Dream Of Jeanie – good in its day, Mary Tyler Moore – Excellent & Soap – never watched that much . I would have complete sets of Beverly Hillbillies, Bob Newhart, Newhart – SUPERB & Petticoat Junction – loved as a kid, again, not so much, same with the Hillbillies.
The others mentioned above in your comment before these, the first years of MASH were the best, though I really liked David Ogden Stiers as Charles Emerson Winchester. The show got really liberal leaning and not as funny towards the final years. The others in that group you mentioned I rarely watched, and Jerry Seinfeld never did much for me either, but Jason Alexander as George was a HOOT! And after Coach died on Cheers, it lost some luster too.
I also loved Frasier and you should check out the British series “Minister” and “Yes, Minister” if you want some drowl(Spelling?) subtle, hilarious humor, as well as “The Days of Summer Wine” and "As Time Goes By:.
As far as Carol Burnett, google You Tube and check out the Dentist scene with Harvey Korman and Tim Conway. Talk about laughing until the tears come!
I must say Wayne Rogers is QUITE the BUSINESSMAN! He is on one of the Saturday morning FOX Business Shows, and that man is QUITE KNOWAGEABLE! No wonder if left the acting profession!
My first attempt may have been even more long-winded, Fellow Baby. When it vanished into cyberspace I debated whether or not to bother retyping it. I typed it in Word the second time around.
I thought M*A*S*H got downright serious toward the end. I think this had a lot to do with Alan Alda having more of a creative role in the show. And I never want to see the series finale again.
I like Frasier too, but for the moment I’m watching the reruns on TV. I’m at the point now where I’m being really choosy about what to collect with my remaining space. I’m waiting on the last 2 seasons of Bob Newhart and so far, they’ve only released the first season of Newhart.
Our local PBS station doesn’t have any good British shows on Saturday or Sunday any more. I loved watching PBS in Dallas though. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Keeping Up Appearances. I suppose I eventually want to collect the series, but those British shows are very pricy.
