One analogy I have heard was to think of voting as a bus. The route to where you want to go may not be direct, but it is in the direction you choose. None of the buses (candidates) will ever go the way you want 100% of the time, but if it does then you can bet they are lying to someone to get that vote. So choose the one that will get the country in the general direction that you wish it to go. Then at the next bus change (election), pick the one that continues in the direction you wish to continue.
