My son hated playing goalie. No action in youth league. But, he could kick from one goal to the other and his wingspan was more than any of the other players.
Besides, the goalie suffers most when the rest of the team isn’t doing the job. It’s like being the best punter in the NFL; no matter how good you are, the fans don’t want to see you take the field.

a goalie’s job has no reward
they do the most important part and only get a pat on the back

Yukoneric’s son sounds like my oldest nephew. he was the same, as a kid, except he wanted to play goal and excelled when he finally got the chance.
