The sonnet I liked best was that ’60s TV show with Walter Brennan.

Yes, Joe, EVERYBODY got the cartoon’s joke. It’s not terribly obscure. (BillHinds, I don’t mean that as a criticism.)

Joe, this is what I mean when I say comic strips don’t need to have everything spelled out A-B-C. People like a chance to figure things out for themselves; they don’t need footnotes, and if what had been implicit in the strip is made explicit in the comments, it takes away that chance for other people to have that “Aha! NOW I get it!” moment.

If anybody is really troubled by an obscure reference or a troubling gap in the continuity of the joke-telling, they will ask for assistance. Failing that, if nobody says “I don’t get this”, assume that they do.

Can’t we just have a couple of laughs without having to THINK about it…after all, it takes all the FUN out of it…

^^Nicely said, fritzoid. There may also be more than one way to interpret the joke, and commenting on it as such. What peeves me is that holier-than-thou attitude when I’m told that there is only one way to read the strip and I didn’t read it correctly. Sometimes reading between the lines is more fun.
