Elbows work well. You still get the foul, but it sends a better message to the idiot causing trouble. (Ty Cobb used to take a file and sharpen his cleats in front of the other teams dugout and mention he’d be sliding in later on. Reason no one ever invites him the the Field of Dreams.)

Think of it as an audition for a role in one of the medical shows; express the pain in broad strokes like a professional soccer player.
