Mornings lost some of their charm the morning after I learned what birds were actually singing. According to my teachers, at best they were singing, “Hey BABY…WHOEVER you are…I have a nest and I’m the best…let’s make eggs!!!”and at the worst-“I’m the biggest meanest wickedest songbird in this tree and if you don’t stay away from my nest I’ll peck your eyes out.”Let’s all sing like the birdys sing, expletive expletive expletive./sigh
In the closest town from here (pop. c. 1600), they have a mailbox in the Walmart parking lot, in the parking lot in front of a shopping center, and in front of the P. O. Probably a couple of others I don’t know about . . .Granted, these aren’t neighborhood mailboxes.
The mailboxes in my neighborhood were for public use when I first moved here in the ‘70s. The mailboxes are still there, but are now used to store the mailbag for that immediate area. The public, (teens or young adults) also use it for artistic expression. This has also proven the need for more art classes. Our graffiti artists just don’t put out quality material.C.
“Freestanding neighborhood mailboxes like that are about as common as dial phones these days.”.I have one about half a block away. And there are at least 6 in random places down town. When I lived in a neighborhood with cluster boxes, each cluster had a box designed to accept letters to mail.
I would hear Robins sing at about 4 oclock in the morning . It sounds so beautiful. The early bird catches the worm but, come on now, how are they seeing anything? I’ts dark outside.
We have outgoing slots in our ganged mailboxes, but that is down the street and around the corner from my house. That 1/4 mile walk would be nice if the sidwalks did not dip at every driveway.
I love hearing the mockingbirds singing outside most of the day and try to keep them supplied with snacks in appreciation- especially grapes which they like a lot.

Yes but she talked pleasantly to YOU little guy. I’d take that over being fed. As long as I get fed once in a while.

Looking out my office window, I once saw two little boys in front of a mailbox. One was holding the other up. He was the one peeing in the open flap.

Now that the mail receptacle has been fed, it needs a Reader’s Digest or something equivalent.
