I did. Once, in 1990, when I was between careers and repurposing my employment, I ate two fruitcakes. I had sold them to my mom in 1970 and 1971 for band fundraisers. They weren’t bad, but they were well sealed and unopened until I was desperate.
One year I went all out on a couple of fruitcake recipes I found. The dark recipe calls for chocolate and a large bottle of rum. The light one is predominantly cherries and pecans and requires a large bottle of brandy. The people who said, “Oh, fruitcake. Thanks, I think” called me back to say “wow.”
I have had great fruit cakes in the past (unfortunately my elderly aunt died). Most store bought fruit cakes I find to be inedible. It is similar to Irish soda bread where most experience what seems to be as dry as a brick of sawdust left out in the dessert, but the bread I make is extremely moist and has been mistaken for a cake.
Good fruitcake is delicious. The fruitcake I make is delicious. It can last 20 years because it is preserved in alcohol. And anyone who doesn’t appreciate it is a fruitcake.

Love fruitcake — the darker and rummier the better. I guess we can’t all be Twinkie fans.

The fruit cake companies will rise up over this one. Unless they’ve just eaten their product. Then they’ll be unable to rise up.

America is the only part of the world that is incapable of making a decent fruitcake.

You ate a 20 year old fruitcake and lived to tell about it? They should have you on Ripley’s Believe It or Not .

Homemade fruitcake is one thing. The crap you buy at the store…. Then again, nut allergies do have their upside :)
