I might feel different about “Body Art” if there were an established esthetic for it. I’m rather Familiar with Maori Facial Tatooing, for example, and EVERY mark has a SPECIFIC Meaning; Battles fought, how many Wives and Children, Rank in the Tribal and clan structure, etc. It’s an effective means of COMMUNICATION.
If I ask an American what their Tatoo MEANS, they look at me like I sprouted an extra head:
My LEAST favorite “Pluggers” ever. I never thought there’d be a snotty, judgmental one. I thought a Plugger would never judge by appearances. Very disappointing, Gary. Shame on you.
He’s going to be lucky that he doesn’t get hit for looking. Several times, I’ve gotten threatened with bodily harm for just noticing the ‘decorations’ not staring and the female was by herself. So, for what do they have it if not for ‘admiring’?
@1after909 – a recurring theme of “Pluggers” is the narrowing viewpoint often demonstrated by older people as they see society move away from their norms. I prefer to celebrate those who maintain mental, emotional, and physical flexibility as they age.
My philosophy is live and let live. Some of my friends have numerous decorations, and that’s their choice. I don’t love them any less for their artwork. However, like it or not, society does judge by appearances, and my first thought when I see a woman all covered in tattoos is not, “I’ll bet she’s a bank president.”
He didn’t say “tattoos” he said “multiple tattoos” & though that is a generalization it is also a valid point in some instances. Similar to people who are addicted to getting plastic surgery there are some people addicted to getting tattoos, maybe not all people with multiple tats, but some of them. However I don’t know if that indicates a violent mental illness or something more akin to someone with bulimia, a self-loathing & may be more a danger to themselves rather than others.
Indy Man: I feel that way about text on T shirts. If you don’t intend for people to read them, why wear them? Actually, breasts get in the way of the text and so are not what is being noticed. I don’t care for udders either, since I am not in the dairy business.
I went to urgent care at my HMO last month and both my Dr and nurse had creepy tattoos. The male nurse had a skull and crossbones on his ring finger. Now, that gives you pause…
Just wander around WM if you want to view a tats/piercings show. I try to imagine some of those women when they reach their 70’s or 80’s. The grandkids will just think people used to be born with wrinkly pictures all over them.
This strip actually goes back before 2012, 10-1-2006, if the date on the one I saved is accurate. The caption was “Pluggers remember having to go to a circus to see a tattooed lady.”

“Means, it doesn’t have to MEAN anything.”
Then why did you do it?"
“I. . . uh . . . ?”

Slaves get marked – there are many waiting in line for them.
A guy I knew married a girl from Mexico City – her family was shocked that he had a cartoon tattoo, only jailbirds have them.

To whomever it may concern: I won’t criticise your hairstyle / choice of clothes / facial expression if you don’t criticise my tattoos.
