Long ago I had a boss that insisted everyone have a clean desk at the end of the day. Since I am a software developer I would have several piles of source code (yes on paper in those days) with changes that needed to be applied. I pointed out to my boss how long it would take me to get those piles back in proper order every morning and my time could be put to better use than trying to sort piles of paper. His solution – I had to close my office door when I left for the day. Worked for me!
Ouch. Rather cold this morning. -34C with windchill -41C (which is within a degree as the same temp in F) Glad I did not have to go outside. I think it is finally January. I know the ice huts have been appearing on the lake starting last weekend which is later than a ‘normal’ year. I think the warm weather that melted the ice in mid December kind of delayed things.
Just return the call, Cathy. If it looks as though you’ve got nothing there to do, then your company may decide that you’re not essential enough to keep and will lay you off. Believe me when I say the generated work produced from that one phone call would be a whole lot better than finding yourself at the unemployment office tomorrow, looking for a new job!

“A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind.” I’m pretty sure I never had a clean desk, but I’m not all that sure about a dirty mind.

Do the work that you are being paid for, so you can go and buy all those things you love, and never use.

Overthinking things just a bit, Cathy? The off switch for the brain must be somewhere nearby.

I too once had a boss who insisted not even a coffee cup was allowed on the desk. I worked for her all of 3 days.
