Delta has community spirit, but even she isn’t likely to think of what seniors might actually need and want.

@mercedes…sounds like Token has a lot more on the ball than pseudo critics such as yourself. Teenagers today don’t know how to dress classy or to be people-friendly. Seniors would probably love Delta for her considerate actions towards them. From what I’ve seen in the last few years, today’s teenagers love to wear clothes straight from the trash bin.

My girls wore stuff from Goodwill, and they didn’t look like trash. They looked pretty good- even my little Goth. (Karma got her though- she has twin girls and she and her husband live in an explosion of pink frills.)

I have a confession to make though. I have never really liked Bernice, and the past couple of weeks have not helped any. She is consistently negative, she’s cynical, rude, unkind, even to someone’s face. And her attitude about Quill really stinks. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I remember the fling with the older guy in the wheelchair. If it’s anyone who should not be saying anything about the genuineness or appropriateness of a romantic relationship, it’s Bernice.

Wow, the students of the school are going to make ’gift baskets" for seniors on their spring break and in return the seniors have given these students $17 Trillion in national debt which these students can never hope to repay.

“Here’s your basket, Grandma, and my generation has no hope of ever paying off your debts. Thanks.”

I agree..Bernice needs to stop being so..well rude towards her friends. One BFF is finally in a happy relationship and the other is always looking for new ways to make a difference. In real life Bernice might have alienated her friends so much that they no longer wanted to associate with her. We all have quirks and yeah sometimes those quirks can get on our nerves, but when you have a true friend that’s stuck by you all these years why risk losing them by constantly being to put it bluntly a smart mouth?

The seniors would probably be very happy just to see and talk with the kids, whether or not they bring baskets. How often do they see young people?

It would be easy to learn what the nursing home residents really need and would want in such a basket. Magnifiers are a good suggestion, along with stamps, as mentioned. Other things could include pens, paper, maybe crossword puzzle books, grooming supplies and other useful items, instead of “dust catchers”.

Bernice is right. As I age I see the dreadful harm excessive ambition causes to our psyches, to our families, and to our bodies. Delta really needs to learn serenity and to model it for us.

I’m also an advocate for Delta’s character development. She’s so perfect that she borders on unreal. The most “real” she ever got was when she got cancer years ago. After that went into remission, she became boring. No, I don’t think she should become like another character but with a tan, but she’s been around long enough that we should see a different side of her. To use @mercedes wording, she should be less of a “token”.

And, isn’t she wearing an ascot today?

She could call a senior center and get permission to bring in a couple of small animals from a local shelter, just for an hour or two. Many seniors miss having their own pets and would love to have the company of a furry friend for a little while.

Bern, Bern, Bern. "You need to do two things, Delta:1) Get a life2) Enjoy it.*You really think wandering around at the mall is 1) Getting a life?2) Having fun?*My experience is that older folks love the attention of having teens do something for them. If the teens give knick knacks and candy— great! The seniors will pass them on to the grandkids!*(P.S. I’m volunteering at an Easter Egg hunt Sat. Thanks for taking care of the other end of the age scale, Delta.)

Levi, thanks for explaining the arduous procedure to becoming a “Pro”. The test would be too difficult, so I enrolled in, and just completed, an on-line course, “Luann Pro Certification Preparation” by the University of Phoenis (only $339.99).*And what we learned!*Sample questions include:1) Who is Puddles’s father?2) What is Luann’s middle name?

And the sample essay was:Explain the role of existentialism in the formation of Frank’s character and give three examples.*My, but I admire you Pros!

I think Delta’s idea is great, as well as comments about useful things, and just visiting. The baskets themselves could be useful or disposable. Teens could do that and still have fun during their break. Some of the other comments here are disturbing

As someone who worked in a nursing home, I can tell you those senior citizens would love to get any kind of gift. They would’t see it as gathering dust, they would see it as someone remembering they exist.

I typically just get my mom some gift cards (she’s always getting more clothes) and my dad CDs (he’s got a player in his truck; it helps with his commute). []As far as Delta goes, I agree that she’s being a bit too free with the effort of others. It’s one thing to round up willing volunteers; it’s another thing to coerce people into doing something like this, especially with the threat of it being a grade in school. Delta crossed a line with that recommendation, and Bernice was right to call her out on it.

Criticize Delta all you want, but she’s someone who has her act together and actually lives for something other than boys (like Luann) or being cynical and constantly criticizing everyone around her (like Bernice) or goofing off in school (like Knute) or acting like a nervous wreck around girls (like Gunther) or her own image (like Tiffany). And in the words of Forrest Gump: “And that’s all I have to say about that.”

Delta reminds me of my older sister, who is always volunteering other people without consulting them first. I can remember I Easter where she had all of us siblings making bunnies out of cotton balls for the kids ward at the hospital or something. Good intentions, but it would be nice if she asked first.

Perhaps she could find herself paired up with a “slacker genius” type who is all sorts of gifted but doesn’t seem too terribly inclined to make use of his gifts unless he has to or it seems to be in someone’s (usually his) best interests, something that would easily frustrate the snot out of her.[]The twist could be that the guy used to be a major over-achiever just like her until he got carted into the hospital with a bleeding stress ulcer. His “laid back” persona isn’t simply apathy towards the world; it’s a doctor-mandated lifestyle adjustment to keep him from getting an even worse stress-related condition. If the guy hadn’t learned to chill out, prioritize his life, and perhaps even get a hobby or two, he’d have been right back in the ER.[]Cue Delta having to face herself in the mirror over that one.[](And yes, under-18s can get ulcers. I had one back when I was 9, courtesy of a teacher who had no business being a teacher.)
