Didn’t remember Lester Gooch. But this reminds of the story of Earl K. Long, brother of Huey who ran for Governor of Louisiana as well. During some bitter times with his wife, the wife somehow managed to get him committed to a sanitarium and in Texas where he had no influence.
Eventually he was able to get his case to a judge who ruled in his favor and had the place release him and give him something attesting to his good mental health.
Soon thereafter his began his campaign to be Governor and he would begin speeches by declaring that he was the only one in the race who could proclaim that he was sane and even had the papers to prove it.
