Ok, it’s complicated…But if anyone is interested…there’s a whole Wikipedia article on the controversies vs. cooperation in the use of Native American symbols for sports teams….HERE
In Kansas City, we have a real fountain called “The Fountain of Ewes.” I don’t know how to post a picture of it in here, although if somebody could be so kind as to do it?
Thanks, Susan. The fountain’s been renovated more than once since it was originally installed. I used to walk by it every so often although I haven’t for a few years. Maybe I should, just to see what it’s doing these days……….
Years ago there was a group of Navajo high-school students who called their intramural basketball team the “Fightin’ Whities” to bring attention to the offensive names of sports teams. This plan backfired because white people thought it was funny and the team captain was flooded with orders for “Fightin’ Whities” T-shirts.
Not necessarily, of course. From my recollection, a member of the Oklahoma band wrote off a letter with the implication that it had come from the Florida group which came as quite a surprise to the Florida group and the university.
There is current controversy over the Washington Redskin’s refusal to change their name.http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2013/06/12/roger-goodell-defends-redskins-nickname-in-a-letter-to-congress/

Bri — I’ve wondered about that, cos so many tribes and Native American groups have protested and petitioned over team names.
Good to know this one is sanctioned.
Of course, I was scolding Dan over the pun, not the team name.
(Like anybody takes me seriously if I complain about a pun.)

Wow, Bri… I think I need to Google that… interesting.
Meanwhile… haven’t seen you at the Tiki for a while.

Godfrey….. a Google search seems to find it on TWO different bases… some rocks with a small waterfall, and a funky metal (?) platform.
Hard to find any info but from the brief descriptions, they’re both noted as being in KC.
Did someone change the base at some point?

Night-Gaunt… it’s more complicated than that…There’s no clear answer as to who has the right to decide.
That’s why I linked to the Wikipedia article.

For that matter, maybe there’s more than one fountain nowdays, although originally I know it was just the one.

“Utah” is from a Ute word meaning “High in the mountains”.
