Another scary rural legend: Hootenhoppers. Giant, man eating grasshopper-like creatures with flaming eyes and jaws like scythes.

No wonder Appalachian valleys are called “hollers.”

Telling ghost stories must be a favorite pasttime in the Appalachian mountains, I did a quick search and there sure are a lot of them.

I’ve heard a TON of stories about people who looked out the winder, or some other place, and seen long dead Granny or some other familiar figure, beboppin’.Never heard one where anyone ran up to them and saying, “Hey, Granny!! Granny!! What’s it like where you are??”

Even though you might not hear banjos in Times Square, you could be in the same danger.

    La Llorona would win.

There are advantages to being already dead.
