There are almost 5000 people in line for the British throne. Thomas Edison- creator of the lightbulb- also invented a piano made from concrete! Wonder why?! Janice of Hawaii cannot fit her full name on her driver's license!
Was Edison TRYING to make the piano movers go to a chiropractor if a concrete piano were successful? Also, imagine some non-Hawaiian getting tongue-twisted on Janice’s surname… I bet it won’t be able to fit on her future grave stone.
The piano was already invented, he just made it out of something other than wood. A fact I was flushed to discover when I applied for my toilet paper spinet patent.
Many years ago, at the former day job, back when disk space was seriously expensive, when setting up the Payroll system, we made the “Last Name” field the length of that of one of our employees of Greek ancestry. 23 characters long….
Today, you tend to run with about 25, just in case, and in some systems, there’s no fixed length at all. OTOH, getting that onto a Driver’s License, or just about any other document, is the Programmer’s problem, and he or she needs to think about such things if the Analysts & Designers didn’t….
Back in those days, I worked with a sweet young thing from IBM who’s constant complaint was that the salesman always seemed to say that “we can do that”, and then it was up to her to make it work. Then she’d go yell at the salesman.
What you do with a language like Hawaiian, I don’t know. Never had that problem, and couldn’t talk anybody into paying for me to go out and research it [grin].

5000, huh? I guess a 22nd cousin is even further down than that, so I don’t have a chance.

Read about this recently. From memory she can now fit her full name on her licence after the government made some changes.

Maybe if she just used “Jan” instead of “Janice.” Used to date a Janice and I used Jan for convenience sake.

My college friends and I wondered if our school performance changed the number of people who would have to die before we became president.

Hey, don’t bad mouth the Mythbusters. I’m a fan. They’re a great way to make science fun.
