I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it myself. Sparkplug is getting blamed for Nightmare’s trampling. Some people predicted that, yesterday. It seems that Kolossal isn’t the only one that can do a horse switcheroo. Tracy has just been examining Sparkplug’s markings. I wonder if he’ll notice that Nightmare is not Sparkplug.
Good morning everyone! Last week I discovered the new Dick Tracy strip in my local paper (after a co-worker left at the desk) and loved it. I used Go Comics to go back to the start of this creative teams run and get all caught up on the stories, they are all excellent and I look forward to the Annie cast sharing an adventure soon.
Angus screwed up big time! He’s pulled off so many crimes in the past, that’s he’s become overconfident. An old cop once said to a clas, “You know why we catch crooks? They’re stupid and careless in the long run.”
By now, Tracy knows every mark on Sparkplug and Slowpoke, thanks to Scott. Why the heck didn’t Angus just put a contract on Kolossal and be done with it? One glance at Nightmare and Tracy will figger it out.
So we find Kolossal stomped to death by a horse. Under today’s sensibilities we do not see the mutilated body—probably too gruesome. In Gould’s day he would have shown graphically the wages of crime. It’s not that I would particularly want to see the grisly sight of Kolossal’s head smashed in, it’s just that the difference in sensibilities is apparent in the way things are portrayed today compared to Gould’s day. Odd that prime time TV shows have no problem with showing violence and actors portraying dead bodies with horrendous and graphic makeup.
It must be a bit difficult for Mike and Joe to have to tiptoe around graphic violence in a hard-hitting detective strip but they have handled it admirably—the shadow of Doubleup using his whip on Ponytail is an example that comes to mind. It was much more dramatic in Joe’s portrayal than if it had been more graphic. Still, Kolossal was starting to become an interesting character (questions still exist about the reason for bringing back this character from the distant past). Too bad his swan song was as a shadow talking to Mysta.
Now, this is comic art! The text alone does not, because it cannot, carry the full import of today’s storyline. The visuals are essential. Tracy’s skeptical glances add so much in the way of over- and undertones to the text!………………………………………..Meanwhile, I hope Sparkplug doesn’t end up taking the rap for what the imported hit-horse, Nightmare, did!

I am a little surprised that Tracy is not all over Angus for cleaning up his horse before the police had any chance to examine the scene. In today’s world, everybody knows that you leave a scene of violence totally alone until the police get there. But, maybe Tracy is pretending to go along with Angus, just to see what he’ll do. “Give a man enough rope, and he’ll hang himself.”
I’m also puzzled as to why Angus killed Kolossal. Kolossal was useful to him, even if Kolossal was as shifty as Angus. “Teach him a lesson” was what I was expecting, I was not expecting a “termination.”

It looks like Tracy might be a bit skeptical of Angus’ story.

Well. We went from Kolossal figuratively putting his foot in his mouth to having one put there for him

They cleaned him up? Tampering with evidence? Does Nightmare look like Sparkplug or WILL he when Mr Angus’ crew finishes “cleaning up”?
