But now the crooks steal online. The odds of your payments in the U.S. Mail being stolen is practically nil. In my 25 years working for the U.S. Postal Service, all I ever saw was people who got addicted to drugs and would look for cash in the mail to steal. Once a valuable stamp collection that was sent via the mail disappeared. But cards with cash was the main target of thieves.
I’ll sooner trust online banking. The check never gets lost in the mail or can be stolen. There has been a wave of mail thefts in our area from identity thieves looking for checks. They can wash them & clean out your account. I rarely send checks thru the mail anymore.
My inlaws had their checkbook stolen from their own home. My father-in-law was in the habit of letting people desperate for money come and do (poor) work around the house. And this is the way those people said “Thank You.”

I pay by check all the time. Not worth the hassle of changing a password because of freaking, worthless, waste of skin, hackers breaching accounts.

But your routing number and account number can be processed for a payment without a signature.

I don’t know about now because I haven’t used checks for many years, but it used to be that places wanted umpteen pieces of ID to accept a check.
