We had a sloped basement with a concrete floor, so we could skate board year round. Since we had no skateboards, we took the loose cushions off our old “basement coach,” and tied our clip-on roller skates to them. Those cushions were too floppy to ride standing up, but really comfortable to ride on sitting down. They made great bumper cars, too.

An engine-driven skateboard? Move over, Martin!

Hmmm…I don’t remember skateboards being around in the late 50s-early 60s when I think this strip takes place. Anyway, Red, you’ve got some good ideas for a boy your age, but Rover is gonna have a cow if you put that engine on the board! ;)

I had a Goofy Foot skateboard in 1966!

2×4 with steel wheels from old roller skates was our first attempt at skateboard in the mid 60s. Worked for us until we got store bought, then we were uptown!

I had a skateboard wreck on the sidewalk in 1965, so I know they were around by then. But the word “rad” wasn’t. :-)

Dry land surfing! Been around since the early 50s. But Red needs to get his own board!

When I was a kid, many moons ago, we designed a skateboard with a small motor on it that drove a wheel on the back. It was loads of fun and went quite a ways.

I love ROVERS look in the last panel. His work is never done.
