About ten years ago my neighbor and I decided to put in a lawn following some major work that tore everything out. He knew a guy who could bring in top dirt (not top soil) to cover the work and then the plan was to place sod to spread. Well, it seems that the top dirt had a bunch of weed seed in it and that stuff has taken over. There is virtually no grass left. But it is green.
If we pulled up all the weeds, it would be brown, but it’s green and it’s mowed. And it’s two and a half acres, so we’re no going to get fancy. And after last night’s wind storm, it’s covered with tree branches.
Yes we have 2 lawns totaling about 2 acres. Unfortunately one is up top and the other is the drain field wich is a steep hill. The house is surrounded by gravel. I don’t have to cut it because the hubby has many friends the owe him money. I do cut my moms grass, but I’m gonna have to outsource that because I tore my hamstring Monday. Now I’m laid up for at least a month. It was a wheel kick that went bad, and I didn’t even break my board. It was a terrible Monday.
We’ve always been slave to a lawn until we moved here last year. We have lots of plants in a yard of rocks. So nice not to have all that yard work. There’s a little park across the street if we feel the urge to walk barefoot in the grass.
There was a bit of lawn when I bought this house (back behind the pool where I promptly replaced it with my waterfall and flagstone patios). Even back in Illinois I preferred a natural groundcover to grass, and I consider people who grow lawns here in the desert to be quite bonkers.

I live right across the street from the borough’s backyard (Prospect Park).

Yeah, sure. Some of it’s actually green, too.
