That’s true, a tire probably wouldn’t fit through the butterfly doors on the firebox. It’s also more likely that the locomotive would have run out of water before it ran out of coal. A locomotive tender carries a great deal more water than it does coal because the locomotive uses a great deal more water than it does coal.

I’d suspect there’s a chance of ruining the firebox by using tires as fuel.
