They did this in Costa Rico in 1948 and put the money into education which is free to all clear up to a doctor’s degree.

Legalize all drugs and tax them. You’ll be in the black even faster.

Military is about 22%. Medicare, welfare, social security, medicaid; about 63%.

well, you have to , at least, pay the military, and pay for their food, etc…….the proposal would only include cutting the spending of money on NEW stuff—stuff that is n the middle of construction and design……but then that means you have to lay off, for a year, all the civilian workers that are involved in various military projects.it’s much more complicated then just saying to cut the military budget for a year.and this is from a leftist who does care

Not that anyone really cares, but for the last year for which numbers are available (2011), defense spending totaled $706b. Total spending was $3,603b. Only in the fevered brains of leftists and government spendaholics would one find national defense even a small element of the “cause” of the budget problems.(http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BUDGET-2013-TAB/xls/BUDGET-2013-TAB-3-1.xls)

Not only that, but defense spending is one of the most (heh) defensible expenses for the federal government. Most other functions, like schooling, can be carried out by private organizations.

The point I feel needs to be made here isn’t budgetary at all, but rather the fact that the politicians are all very narrow-minded and too stubborn, unwilling to compromise or try new tactics. A large part of the reason this is even a problem in the first place is just because neither side will cooperate and instead fight each other continually until, in the end, nothing gets done and nothing really changes for the better.

At this point, I’m just about willing to try anything, just so long as they actually can DO something worth while for a change.
