And it just so happened that the American Library Association’s Association for Library Service to Children just voted to remove her name from an award recognizing service to children’s literature because of her literary treatment of Native and African Americans, a debate that’s been going on since the 1930s.
All the controversy over the award change sort of reminds me of a famous quote from 1984:
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.” George Orwell, 1984
