There’s nothing that feels as numbing as looking at the mile markers and realizing you have 900 miles of Texas to go. That’s why my dentist is located in New Mexico. (rimshot)
Google Maps tells me it would take me 1 day and 19 hours to drive from Hartford, CT to Los Angeles. I’m skeptical, but the math does work out to be correct at 70 mph nonstop.
For me to drive to LA, gas would cost me about $500 one way. Then I’d have to drive back for $500 more. I don’t think 6,000 miles would be too easy on the car, so add pre-trip and post-trip service. I think going by plane would be cheaper, faster, and less tiring.

If you took a train across the country, would you see more actual countryside, or would it be as monotonous as driving across the country by car?
